Livingstone and Adam were twins. Hiis sister Isobel also married a Gillespie but they don't appear to have been closely related.

At the time of the 1841 Census they were living at Stane, Cambusnethan in Lanarkshire. His name was spelled Livingston, he was recorded as 30 year soold (understated), a coal miner born in the county (as was the whole family). Elizabeth was 30, Agnes, 9, Margaret, 5, John 3, Alexander, 1. There is no mention of Isabella, suggesting perhaps she had died by this time.

At the time of the 1851 Census Livingstone and Elizabeth and their children were living at Stone Row at the Shotts Iron Works in Shotts. Liginstone was 44, a coal miner, born Carnwath. Elizabeth was 48, born Shotts. Living with them were their children Agnes, 18, a Pithead Assistant, born Shotts; Margaret, 14, a Scholar, born Shotts; John, 12, "at home", born Polmont, Stirling, he is marked as being either blind or deaf and dumb; Alexander, 10, Scholar, born Camnsethan, Lanark; Robert, 8, Scholar, born Shotts; James, 6, Scholar, born Shotts.

The informant on his Death Certificate was his son Robert.

• He resided at the time of the Census in 1851 in Stone Row, , Shotts Iron Works, Shotts, , Lanark, Scotland.

Livingstone married Elisabeth Gillespie, daughter of Alexander Gillespie and Agnes Simpson, on 7 Aug 1831 in Shotts, Lanark, Scotland. (Elisabeth Gillespie was born in 1806 in Shotts, Lanark, Scotland, christened on 30 Nov 1806 in Shotts, Lanark, Scotland and died on 5 Mar 1887 in Stane, Cambusnethan, Calderbank, Lanark, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Chronic Bronchitis 10 yrs/ Enlargement of the heart 1 mth.
