bullet  General Notes:

At the time of the 1861 census Fanny is living at Bobbin Mill, Dalbeattie, Kircudbright. She is the Head of the household, married - no sign of husband William - and born in Ireland. Living here also are sons William, 29, single, a woodcutter born in Creetown, Kirkcudbright; and John, 18, single, a labourer born in Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbright; and grand-daughter Margaret Carruthers, aged 3, born in Dalbeattie (Sarah's daughter).

At the time of the 1871 census she was living at Mill St, Dalbeattie. She was still recorded as married and the Head of the household, her husband was still not there. Aged 56 she was born in Ireland. Living with her were her son John, unmarried, 26, a Sawyer born in Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbright and Margaret Carruthers, grand-daughter, aged 13 born in Dalbeattie. The continued absence of her husband William is curious, given she is the Head of the household. Her age of 56 is also curious as she is recorded as 68 just two years later on her death record.

On grand-daughter Margaret's birth record Fanny was the informant and she made her mark rather than signing indicating she was illiterate.

Fanny married William Carruthers about 1831. (William Carruthers was born circa 1801 in Ireland and died prob aft 12 Jan 1873.)
