Richard Saunders

  General Notes:

There is a record dated 22 June 1615 held in the Devon Record Office (Ref Z16/2/12/1) of a Deed of Partition of parcels of land at Flexburie, Flexburie Lake and Sommerleaze under lease from John Barrett, late of Penquitt Cornwall, John Barrett hs son and heir and Elizabeth his wife. The deed is between Richard Saunders of Stratton, Yeoman and Robert Saunders of Lunstone and John Saunders his brother of the same parish, Yeoman. The areas mentioned above are all within a mile or two of Poughill.

These lands were bequeathed to Richard by his father. It is not clear what the relationship is between Robert, John (Maud see below) and Richard. It is possible Robert is the nephew of Richard (his brother George's son) but in 1615 he would have been around 20 years of age, perhaps too young to be a Yeoman taking on such a big lease?

A subsequent record from 1617 sees Robert and John adjust the terms of their lease with Barrett and this mentions their sister Maud.
