Obviously a man of many talents his occupation was listed as Radio Mechanic and Butcher. His wife was listed as his next of kin, residence Silvermines Road, St Arnaud. His medical examination revealed that he had deafness in one ear.

On the 20th January 1943 he reported for duty in Royal Park with R.R.D (something to do with Radio or Radar perhaps?) and thereafter spent time in Melbourne and Bendigo and NSW. A Confidential Report of his performance in the "No. 2 mechanics NE Type 'A' Course" dated the 16th March 1945 records that he scored 60% in the Written exam, 62% in the Practical, for a final result of 61%. His personal characterisitics were described as "Slow, Interested, Diligent" and under General Remarks "Slow to pick up theory but is good practically. Very interested in work." On the 17th March 1945 his rank of Corporal was confirmed.

He was Discharged from the Army on the 30th January 1946. At that time he was nearly 38 years old, 5' 8" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes fair hair.
