His parents were possibly Alexander Grege and Margaret Murray who had a son named Alexander who was baptised 28 April 1681 in the Parish of Corstorphine in what is now the western suburbs of Edinburgh. As Alexander's first son was named Alexander and second daughter Margaret these parents would make sense under the old naming conventions. He appears to have been an only child.
Both Alexander and Elizabeth were recorded as "in this Parish" in their marriage record.
