They have an unusual marriage record in the registers. In 1842, when Robert is aged 15 and Barbara aged 17 it appears they were contracted to marry in the future. The entry is amongst a number of almost side-notes and differs from the regular entries. It reads:
There is a purpose of marriage betwixt those parties David Morrison in the parish of Kirk liston (??) & Ann Brown in this Parish for a set time, Robert Laird & Barbara Brown for 3d time.
Sure enough they formally married on 1 December 1852. The document records their names as Robert Leard and Barbara Broun in the indexes. On the same page of the register, immediately following their entry is one for the other couple named above, David Morrison and Ann Brown who were married on 24 December.
