bullet  General Notes:

George is famous for joining Francis Cadell in Australia in 1853 and, with Cadell, being a pioneer steamboat Captain and navigator on the Murray River in the 1850's. He was joined in this adventure by his cousins Adam and Thomas Johnstone. He settled at Goolwa, South Australia where many of his descendants live today and conducted a very successful career as a Riverboat Captain and trader on the Murray River.

His headstone says that he was born on 29 November 1829 which is incorrect as he was born 24 November 1828 (record sighted). His parents are clearly named on his death certificate and his place of birth as Cockenzie. He was born as George Johnstone (with the e on the end) and with no middle name, although he seems to have adopted the middle name "Bain" later as that's what he was known by in Australia. His death date on his headstone is also incorrect (29 June 1882) as he died on 29 May 1882 and his funeral reported in the Southern Argus newspaper on 22 June 1882.

George married Elizabeth Barclay, daughter of James Barclay and Unknown, in 1852. (Elizabeth Barclay was born circa 1831 in Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 25 Sep 1920.)
