George Johnstone
Cause of his death was Cancer. General Notes: George is famous for joining Francis Cadell in Australia in 1853 and, with Cadell, being a pioneer steamboat Captain and navigator on the Murray River in the 1850's. He was joined in this adventure by his cousins Adam and Thomas Johnstone. He settled at Goolwa, South Australia where many of his descendants live today and conducted a very successful career as a Riverboat Captain and trader on the Murray River. George married Elizabeth Barclay, daughter of James Barclay and Unknown, in 1852. (Elizabeth Barclay was born circa 1831 in Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 25 Sep 1920.) |
