N.G.V.R is the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles, a militia unit that James Lee Street served in when in PNG. This militia unit took part in the Battle of Rabaul in January and February 1942 when the small garrison in New Britain, PNG, was completely overwhelmed by vastly superior numbers in the Japanese invading forces. After the battle over 1000 Australian soldiers were taken prisoner. Of these around 160, including James Lee Street, were massacred on or around 4 February 1942. The prisoners were marched into jungle near Tol Plantation in small groups and bayoneted by Japanese soldiers.
James married Violet Elizabeth Lynn Gibson in 1924 in Newtown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. (Violet Elizabeth Lynn Gibson was born on 26 Sep 1899 in Balmain North, New South Wales, Australia and died circa 1962 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.)
