At the time of the 1871 census George is living in Tranent. He is aged 36, a coal miner born in Tranent. His wife Sarah is 32 and also born in Tranent. They are the only two in this household.

At the time of the 1881 census they are living in Church St, Tranent. George is 46 and a coal miner born in Tranent. Sarah is 42 and this time is recorded as born in Cockenzie. Living next door is a Francis Young, 34, a coalminer and possibly a brother and Elizabeth his wife, born in Cockenzie.

George and Sarah are still there in 1891 with the same details but 10 years older.
