bullet  General Notes:

Comments from Clyde's daughter, Jane

"My father was born in North Eastern Georgia; his father was a carpenter and farmer. They were like all poor farmers of the Crossroads District of Cherokee County, Georgia. He was born a year after his childhood acquaintance, Dean Rusk.

Dean Rusk was born on February 9, 1909, in Cherokee County, Georgia; Dean Rusk grew up in poverty. His father was Presbyterian minister, until an illness prevented him from continuing this profession. His income was solely depended on farming and mail carrier, like all other farmers in this area, it provide little. Dean Rusk worked his way through Davidson College and later studied on a Rhodes scholarship at Oxford in 1931. In 1960, President John F. Kennedy appointed Dean Rusk as secretary of state, a post he would hold from January 1961 through January 1969. My father spoke of knowing him and his family, when he was quite young. The reason I mentioned this is that it was something my father had mentioned in passing, but it also showed the strength of that generation to overcome proverty.

In 1930 my dad was stationed on the island of Oahu, Scholfield Barracks. He was 20 years old.

Clyde Alexander Wallace, retired from the Air Force as a Chief Warrant Officer, in 1955 and served in World War II. After he retired he attended University of South Carolina, achieving a Masters Degree in Mathematics. He taught high school algebra for about four years in Savannah and Thomaston, Georgia, until he was offered employment at the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington DC in 1961. He died of a stroke in 1974. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery along side our beloved brother Michael Samuel Wallace.
