bullet  General Notes:

He is referred to as John Jones Junr. on his marriage record.

His son Thomas' burial record indicates he was from Cockenzie in 1839.

At the time of the 1841 Census. He was a Fisherman living in Port Seton, Cockenzie. he was born in the Parish and was living in a house with his mother, named as Janet Hunter, aged 60, also born in the Parish. It is just the two of them living there, there is no record of Mary and the children. It appears Mary died in 1838 as there is a record of a burial of a Mary Dickson at Prestonpans, aged 26. who died of "Decline". And son Thomas had died a few months after his mother. As yet no record has been found of John. It is likely that he was being cared for by other relatives.

At the time of the 1861 Census it appears that he was living alone in Port Seton & Cockenzie, but right next door to his brother Robert and his family. However this John is aged 48, when it should be 54 so it's not clear that this is the same John (it may be his cousin son of his Uncle George, but he was married at the time). His son, John, aged 15 was living with Robert's family who were probably caring for him as John was widowed and alone.

The 1861 Census also records on an otherwise empty page a number of people who were absent from Tranent at the time. Amongst those listed were a John Jones and a Robert Jones with the notation "at the Whale Fishing". It's not clear if this refers to the same John and Robert as above. The John may have referred to his first cousin, son of William Jones.

At the time of the 1881 Census he was living in (perhaps No. 43) Ferry Road, Dundee. He was aged 73, a Seaman, born in Tranent. Living with him were his wife Janet, aged 52, a Seaman's wife, also born in Tranent, and his daughter, also named Janet, aged 9, a Scholar born in Tranent.

John had a total of four marriages, with his first three wives apparently dying young. All are named on his Death certificate. He was recorded as a Widower on his last marriage certificate, and usual residence Cockenzie despite that marriage happening in Edinburgh. This wedding was witnessed by his son John Jones Jr. and a John Souter.
