Stanley applied to join the Australian Imperial Force on 6 January 1916 in Tamworth. He was 21 years and 11 months old, 5' 7 1/4" tall with a chest measurement of 35 inches. He listed his postal address as Victoria St, Granville and his occupation as Labourer. However his application was rejected due to "deficient eyesight".
