bullet  General Notes:

Whilst his birth certificate records his name as simply John Jones, the Family Bible records it as John McArthur Jones, although the McArthur has been added later. His death certificate records it as John McArthur Jones too. His headstone records him as John A. Jones!

John started working for the Railways on the 13th February 1884 in Kerang.

From The Argus 18th August 1896:

AN ILL FATED FAMILY
Boort, Monday
Mrs Jones, the wife of John Jones, an engine driver of Boort, was seriously burnt on Sunday morning by her clothes catching fire whilst she was attending to her household duties. Dr. Osborne, of Boort, attended the sufferer, who soon afterwards gave birth to a son. Much sympathy is felt for the family as their second daughter was burnt to death a few months ago, and another daughter a few years earlier in Wedderburn.

John was the informant on his brother James' Death Certificate in 1923. His residence was recorded as North Melbourne.

In 1936 he and Mary Jane were living at 18 Molesworth St, North Melbourne. John owned this house from 1906 until just before his death in 1943, His occupation was Engine Driver. This address currently houses several apartments and was previously a restaurant called "The Great Australian Bite". But before John and Mary bought it, it was the Mona Arms Hotel (1869-1904), and reputedly a brothel before that. Their granddaughter was born in the front room of the house and the family used to return to the restaurant for meals, and sat at a table where she used to sleep! On one such visit the owners were talking about putting in a cellar under the house and she told them that there was already one there (as it had been a hotel) and showed them where it was.

John is buried with his wife, Mary Jane and daughter Elizabeth Scott, in Fawkner Cemetery, Presbyterian Compartment B, Grave 850. His name is recorded as John A. Jones on the headstone.
