bullet  General Notes:

From the Monthly Magazine of the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds, Ashton Unity, April 1888. Page 97 Biography - Bro. J. Napier

Bro. J. Napier P.P.C.S
______

Bro. Joseph Napier, whose portrait accompanies this brief memoir is, like many other prominent members of the Order, a Scotchman, and is at present in Alleghany, Pa., America. He was born in the town of Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, and was the youngest son of William Napier, tailor and clother, in that town, and who carried on business for a period of thirty-five years.

Bro. Napier was the youngest of a family of four sons and eight daughters. He received his education at the Free Church Academy, Stonehaven; but when he was thirteen years of age his parents moved to Calder Bank, Lanarkshire, when he started the trade of an iron moulder, and four years later moved to Glasgow, where he finished his apprenticeship, and joined the Ironmoulder's Association of Scotland, in Glasgow, on the 28th November, 1860, in which society he always took a leading interest, having held the different offices - from shop delegate to chairman of the Executive. The latter office he filled for two years, and was presented with a beautifully-mounted baton on the 6th September, 1884, for his services in connection with the Franchise Demonstration Arrangement Committee.

Bro. Napier was foreman for D.Y. Stewart and Co., St. Rollox, Glasgow, for two-and-a-half years, and for other two years with Moses M'Culloch and Co., Gallowgate, Glasgow.

He married on the 27th November, 1865 (the present being the twenty-fifth year of his married life), Margaret Houston Hamilton, eldest daughter of James Hamilton, late of Renfrew. The famous Dr. Norman M'Leod, of Glasgow, and Chaplain to Her Majesty, was the officiating clergyman. There has been eight of a family - two sons and six daughters - all living except one son, who died on the 14th January, 1877, aged three years.

In matters of religion, our worthy Brother is a member of the Established Church of Scotland, and held the office of Church manager and Sabbath School teacher for some years in the Townhead Parish Church, Glasgow.

Through depression of trade, Bro. Napier left Glasgow for America on the 23rd September 1886, and was unsuccessful for some time in obtaining employment. Ultimately he was fortunate in securing work in Philadelphia, which lasted seven months, afterwards removing to Pittsburgh, where he is at present employed in the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros., one of the largest iron mills in Pittsburgh, where his wife and six of his family joined him on the 7th June 1887. Since his arrival in America, he has joined the Knights of Labour, and the Caledonian Friendly Society, the latter of which is composed of Scotchmen.

Bro. Napier joined the St. Mungo Lodge No. 1563, City of Glasgow District, on the 13th April, 1875, and in June following was appointed Deputy Master; passed through all the various chairs of the lodge, and gave more than ordinary satisfaction to the members in the discharge of his duties. He also acted as treasurer for the annual festival of the lodge in 1882, and was then presented with an emblem of merit in recognition of his services on that occasion. He was afterwards appointed treasurer of the lodge, which office he held for four-and-a-half years. He acted almost constantly as representative of the lodge at the district meetings, and was appointed Pro.D.C.S. on the 12th January, 1878. He passed through the various offices in the district, namely, the pride of Motherwell, St. Andrew, and the Robert Burns Lodges, for which services the latter Lodge presented him with a beautiful gold albert and appendage on the 3rd July, 1883. He also acted as joint instructor to the Sir William Wallace Lodge, which was the first of the large lodges introduced to the Glasgow District, there being no fewer than 200 initiated on the opening day.

Bro. Napier represented the District at the A.M.C held in Glasgow, Hanley, and Bristol, and acted as teller at the last two meetings. He was elected to the Glasgow Extension Committee on the 29th July, 1885, which office he held for twelve months, having assisted in opening no fewer than eleven new lodges during that period.

The members of the lodge have not been unmindfil of him though far away from Glasgow. Bro. Napier had not been long in America when the lodge (with the assistance from a few friends) raised the handsome sum of £17 12s., and forwarded the amount to him, as a small token of their esteem and regard for the many services rendered, and the valuable assistance given to the lodge and district.

Our Brother was an earnest and enthusiastic worker in the cause of Shepherdry, and laboured hard to promote the welfare of the Glasgow District. Let us hope that in the new home he has chosen he may have the blessing of good health and long life, and that his love for our Order may enable him to render it a good service in a country that so much requires it.
