He was commonly known as Jim.

His father died when Jim was just 4 years old and his mother lived with her two young sons in a log cabin at Baker's Gully for a time after his death before remarrying to Charles Tulloch

Prior to becoming Postmaster in Harrietville (succeeding his brother) he had worked at Post Offices in Corryong and Dookie. He was the Postmaster in Harrietville from about 1899 to 1915. He was a prolific photographer and many of his photographs of Harrietville and surrounding areas survive to this day as a definitive record of the times. Tobias Gap was named after him.

He moved with his family to Melbourne 6 weeks after the birth of Lillian Helena.

The cause of her death was Diabetic coma - days, Renal failure - days.

It was a presbyterian ceremony. Witnesses were Ernest Gow and Beatrice May Dare. Both bride and groom signed their names.

Their eldest child. Elizabeth was born 7 months after the wedding which may explain why it was not held in a Church.
