At the time of the 1841 census he and his family were living in Cockenzie. He was 35, a fisherman, born in the county. Wife Sarah was also 35 and born in the county. Living with them were children William, 10 and Sarah, 2, both born in the county. No mention is made of James and Mary, their other two children.

At the time of the 1851 census he was living on Main St, Cockenzie, aged 44 a fisherman, born Tranent, Haddingtonshire. Wife Sarah was recorded as Sarah Jones, age 43, also born in Tranent. Living with them was daughter, Sarah, 12, a scholar. Son William was living with his grandmother Isabella Ramsay in Cockenzie at this time.

No cause of death is recorded on his death record. The informant was his daughter, Sarah, who made her mark rather than signing.

James married Sarah Jones, daughter of Thomas Jones and Isabella Ramsay, on 3 Dec 1824 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland. (Sarah Jones was born circa 1805 in Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 1 Aug 1886 in Church St, Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Old age & debility.
