She was an Agricultural Labourer when son George was born. She was a domestic servant when Alison and Margaret were born in 1875. She was an "outworker" when son David was born in 1880. By 1881 the census records her as a Pauper, living at Door Row, Cockenzie.. She was unmarried and 30. Children living with here were Janet E, 10;George,8; Alison, 6; Ann, 3, David, 1.

By the time of the 1891 census she had moved to Auchterderran in Fife and was living at 46 Grainger Square, a Washerwoman aged 39, born Cockenzie. She was the head of the household which comprised her children George, 18, a colliery fireman, born Cockenzie; Janet, 20 a Pithead worker, Alison, 15, also a Pithead worker, and David, 9 a scholar.
