bullet  General Notes:

Patrick came to Australia around 1851 or 1852. I haven't yet found a record, but given the proximity of Tenterfield to Brisbane, it's possible he landed in Moreton Bay.

Patrick bought land about 10 miles west of Tenterfield, on what is now the Bruxner Highway. It is believed that this land was divided between his sons, Thomas, William and James and that there are still descendants on two of these properties today. It is possible that Patrick & Julia are buried in unmarked graves next to the grave of Harold Whalan in the RC section of the Tenterfield Cemetery.

Patrick's Obituary (probably from the same newspaper) was as follows:

Obituary
PATRICK WHALAN SENR.
The death of Mr. Patrick Whalan, Senior, a very old resident of this district, took place at his residence, Clifton Road, on Monday last at noon. This old pioneer was a native of grand old Ireland - the land which has given birth to so many of the men who have helped to pioneer Australia - having been born in the County of Kilkenny, in the year 1829. In 1852 the late Mr Whalan arrived in Australia, and coming to this district his first engagement was on Tenterfield Station, where he was employed for a considerable time, the owner of that station then being Messrs Christian Brothers. Afterwards he selected from the Crown the property on which he resided at the time of his death - being the first selector on Clifton Run. Sheep farming was the use he put his land to, and in this respect he was most successful, through no other reason than close attention by himself. His sheep were not chanced to the ravages of wild dogs. He was continually with his stock early and late, and travellers by daylight on the Mingoola road could always depend on seeing him shepherding his sheep. And all those years of constant work gave him the long life of 86 years.

At Tenterfield the late Mr. Whalan married Miss Julia (sister of the late Messrs. Thomas and John Connolly, and of the late Mrs. Braid, Senr) who predeceased him 19 years ago. The children surviving are:- Messrs Patrick, Thomas, James and William (all residents of the Tenterfield District), and Mesdames G.A. Holley (Clifton), Perry (Emmaville), E. Hall (Sunnyside), and Howe (Lismore), and Miss Jane Whalan (Clifton).

The funeral took place on Tuesday last, being conducted by Mr H. Cooper. The interment was made in the Roman Catholic portion of the local cemetery, the Rev. Father Clancy conducting a service at the graveside.
