At the time of the 1861 Census the family was living at 4 Low Patrick Street, Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland. The house had one room with one or more windows. John was recorded as aged 42, a Masons labourer, born Hamilton. Living here also were his wife Christina, aged 31, born Slamannan; son James, aged 13, a Scholar, born Hamilton; daughter Jane, aged 10, a Scholar, born Hamilton; son Robert, aged 6, a Scholar, born Hamilton.

At the time of the 1881 census he and Christina were living at 31 Gateside St, Hamilton. John was recorded as 62 years old, a mason's labourer, born Larkhall, Lanark. Christina was 55, born Slammanan. Living with them was son James, 32, single, a Mason born in Hamilton and grandson James Shepherd, a scholar aged 9, born in Hamilton.

At the time of the 1891 census he and Christina were living in Gateside St (probably 25), Hamilton, Lanark. He was a General Labourer born Hamilton. Living with them was grandson James Shepherd, a Mason, aged 19.

• He worked as a Mason's Labourer according to wife, Christina's Death Certificate in 1897.

John married Christian Shaw, daughter of John Shaw and Jane Crossan, on 8 Mar 1846 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland.
