At the time of the 1861 Census she was living at Sewhouse, Bankfoot, Lesmahagow and named as Ellen. She was a 62 year old Pauper. Her house had 2 rooms with windows. Living with her were her unmarried sons, Matthew H. aged 31, an agricultural labourer; William, 29, a Church Officer and Sexton; James, 19 a Journeyman Joiner. Also living here were granddaughter Helen Riddel, 13, a cotton weaver; Janet Black, granddaughter, aged 3 born Lesmahagow; Janet Main, daughter, 23, married and a farm servant's wife; and a grandson Robert Main, aged 2 months, born Lesmahagow. I do not presently know where Janet Black and Helen Riddell fit in.

At the time of the 1871 Census she was living with her son William on Main St, Lesmahagow. Her age was recorded as 74 and her name recorded as "Hellan". Also living here was Janet Cowie, niece (of William) aged 13, a scholar, born Lesmahagow. William was an unmarried gravedigger, aged 40.

Helen married James Cowie, son of Matthew Cowie and Janet Hill.
