John and his wife Jane were 2nd cousins, both descended from John Jones and Agnes Young.

At the time of the 1881 Census John was aged 43 and living on High St, Cockenzie with his new wife, Jane aged 36 and Jane's children Jane and John Thomson aged 15 and 10 respectively. Also in the household was William Donaldson, recorded as Father in Law but more likely John's father. He was aged 71, married, a Fisherman born in Cockenzie.

By the time of the 1891 Census he was living at Manse Lane with his family. Step son John was a Fisherman too by now and there were three new children that he had with Jane, William, Marion and James aged 9, 8 and 5 respectively. Jane's name is recorded as "Jane Horn Donaldson".

In 1901 he and Jane are living on the Main St, South side. John is a fisherman aged 63. Living here also are children Marion, single, aged 18, a Domestic Servant, James, 14, a scholar and a boarder Charles Donaldson, 21, a Fisherman.

In 1911 he and Jane ("Jean" in the Census) were living at 103 High St, Cockenzie. John was 73, a Fisherman. Their son James was living there with them. He was also a Fisherman, aged 25 and single. Their house had 2 rooms with one or more windows and they are recorded as having 3 children together, all still living.

John married Jane Horn, daughter of John Horn and Jean Jones, on 19 Apr 1880 in Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland. (Jane Horn was born on 23 Oct 1844 in Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland, christened on 4 Nov 1844 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 19 Oct 1917 in 103 High Street, Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Senile Decay.
