James was the informant on his wife's death certificate. He signed his name so he was literate.

At the time of the 1861 Census he was living in Port Seton/Cockenzie with wife Jean. He was a fisherman aged 49, born in the parish of Tranent. Jean was aged 48. Living here also was daughter Janet, aged 25, sons Thomas, 19 and John, 17 both Fishermen; and daughters Margaret, 12 and Elizabeth, 9. Their house had 2 rooms with windows.

The cause of her death was Old Age.
