Little is known about Nessie Margartte Bessell except for a love affair she had in her younger days with Private David John Morgan, son of Thomas and Gwendoline Morgan of Gordon Street Hurstville in S>
ydney. Nessie and David planned to marry despite the apparent objections of David's parents. To finance their new life together David decided to enlist in the Australian Army and served with the 60th >
Battalion Infantry in France during the First World War. He regularly sent Nessie a portion of his wages to save and pay for their wedding and a home. On 28th April 1918 David died of wounds he receiv>
ed while fighting in the Battle of the Somme in France. He is buried at the Pernoise British Cemetery in France. He is listed on the Wall of Rememberence (Memorial Panel 170) at the Australian War Mem>
orial in Canberra.
