bullet  General Notes:

I can't find a birth/baptism record for him despite most census documents recording he was born around 1834 in Ceres, Fife. It is possible his parents were not married: on his death certificate his mother is recorded as "Mary McQueen" NOT "Mary Gardiner, M.S. McQueen" which was the convention used by the Registrar for other entries on the page. He and Margaret have possibly adopted the traditional naming conventions as the first born daughter was named after Margaret's mother and the second born son after her father. This would suggest that Robert's parents were Robert and Elizabeth..

I can not find a definitive record for him in the 1841 Census. If there was an issue with his birth he may have been living in a household and being raised under a different surname. There is only one 6 year old Robert Gardiner in Fife at that time, in Dunfermline, but he is recorded as the son of Alexander G and Mrs G (no forename) along with a number of other children.

At the time of the 1851 Census he appears to have been living in the large household of John Irvine Boswell, a Landed Proprietor & Deputy Lieut[enant?] & J.P. of the County of Kincardine. He was recorded as 18 years of age, a Groom, birthplace Ceres, Fifeshire.

Robert was described as "from this parish" (ie Lecropt, Perthshire), Margaret from "the parish of St Mary's Edinburgh" on their marriage record in 1854. They paid 4 shillings "to the poors funds". According to daughter Isabella's & son James' birth certificate they were married 15th April 1854 at Calderbank, and according to daughter Mary Ann's birth certificate they were married 18th April 1854 at Calderbank.

At the time of the 1871 Census the house in which he and his family lived at 417 Parliamentary Rd Glasgow housed a total of 18 people in various rooms. His part of it had 2 rooms with windows. He was a Wood Sawyer, aged 37, born in Ceres, Fifeshire. Living with him were his wife Margaret, 41, daughter Margaret, 17, daughter Elizabeth, 12, son William, 11, daughter Isabella, 8, daughter Marion, 7, son George, 3. He is also recorded at this address in the 1865 Valuation Rolls, occupation "Guard" (he was a Railway employee according to other documents). His surname is spelled "Gardner". The property was owned by one William Anderson and the rent paid was 14 pounds per year.

At the time of the 1881 Census he lived with his family (except Robert jnr who had married and obviously moved out by that time) at 33 Russell St, Glasgow. He was 47 years of age and a Sawyer. Also living with the family was a boarder, Maggie Milne aged 17, a Printing Machine worker, and unmarried. The following year she married Robert's son, William. The household had 2 visitors - John McLuskie and Elizabeth McLuskie (nee Gardiner, Robert's daughter) who had been married a year earlier.

At the time of the 1891 Census he was at 28 Abercorn Pl, Glasgow living with his widowed daughter Elizabeth and her son James.
